View Full Version : SLES 11 SP1- Slow Network When Connecting to Remote DB

I am having an odd problem that I have not been able to find a solution
to:

-Hardware-
I have a Dell 2970 Server with 8GB RAM running SLES 11 SP1 Fully
patched
which runs Apache 2.x and PHP 5.3.x
Cisco 4500 Switch
Remote MySQL 5.1.x Server running on a vmware server.

-Problem-
We currently have a PHP application running on an older machine that
runs SLES 10 SP2 and uses the MySQL server mentioned above.
We have outgrown that machine so we setup the 2970 for the application.
However, when we try to run the same app it runs great for a
few minutes then we will get "dead spots" where the browser thinks and
nothing is displayed. Eventually the page will show, but the lag
is very annoying. If I do a traceroute, during the dead spots, to the
MySQL server from the new box, the first one comes back OK, the 2nd
and 3rd one timeout. If I let the box sit for a few minutes, without
network activity, the behavior returns to normal and eventually (usually

within a few minutes) it will exhibit the dead spots again. During the
time where it operates properly, all traceroutes come back OK.

The current server doesn't have any issues at all.

We have been over switch settings, linux settings etc. etc. and we
cannot find an answer to the issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
