View Full Version : JRE problems

PauliusC

Hello everybody,

Another problem for me. Actually I was trying to run Minecraft on my
SLED 11. I installed it using Wine (.exe file), it all went good. The
problem is, I can't start it. It says that I need JRE 1.5.0. Well I've
checked that I have JRE 1.6, so my only guess the problem is with java
itself. Though not sure what should I do.

Thanks

As your application has no idea it is running in wine I'd also bet it
wants a windows JRE to run. Have you installed a windows JRE in wine?

Good luck.

Have not tried running it on Linux... but why use Wine? For one, Wine
will run Windows binaries and not look at (or use) any Linux packages
you have installed.
Minecraft has a jar file for Linux systems that you should be able to
run without Wine.

Cheers,

Did you install Windows version of Java in Wine?

'WineHQ - Minecraft Minecraft Beta 1.4'

Yes, but if you install Minecraft in Wine then you also need to install
Java in Wine to get it to work.

I managed to start Minecraft, but something's wrong with graphics.
Couldn't see a menu or something. I believe, something's wrong with my
java, because when I go to minecraft.net to play single-player classic
version I just get white screen. Any ideas how to fix this?

Did you see/try magic31's suggestion of just running it under Linux
natively? If it's truly Java-based there should be no need for wine.

Good luck.

Well, I managed to start it somehow, but as I've said, something's
wrong with graphics. I can only see a black screen when loading map.
Probably something with java, though no idea what.

I get black (or sometimes white) screen when I start the map, also,
there are some files, like hs_err_pid625.log, appearing in my user
directory. I figured that these are java errors. I would really
appreciate any help on how to fix my java.

Thanks

Updated Java to the last version, still the same. I'm getting nothing
more than white screen on the browser and the black screen offline.
Can't figure it out.

Hi
Did you install the original application in your home directory, or
systemwide. Normally it's easy to identify issues if you create a test
user and try it out there. If the same issue then it's systemwide
rather than just the user.

Minecraft is in my home directory I guess, but the problem is probably
system-wide, and that is because I have the same problem (white or black
screen) while trying to play classic version in browser (mozilla).

java -jar /path/to/your/minecraft.jar

Oh, sorry, forgot to mention. No, I'm not using Wine with Minecraft
anymore. All the problems I've mentioned happened while I was trying to
play minecraft exactly how you just told me to. Yet it doesn't work this
way and also in browser (I'd like to play at least in browser, maybe
it's easier to fix).

Actually, I would like to try to reinstall my java, but the problems
are:

- I have the latest java installed manually somewhere (not having
deleted the original 1 that came up with SLED) and I wouldn't know how
to delete it if needed
- I'm not sure if it's ok to delete the original 1 that came up with
SLED
- I'd like to know if there are any repositories of java, so that the
new java (if I'm going to install any) would be installed in the right
place

Also, if someone could pass me the code which would show me what
graphics drivers I have, that would be helpful.

Thanks

Hi

/usr/sbin/hwinfo --gfxcard

Or use YaST and it will print out to a text
file for you.

I installed jre 1.6.0.27 version, but when I type java -version, it
shows that I still have the 1.6.0.26. Why is that?

The 'java' first in your environment's PATH variable is apparently being
found before (or instead of) the 1.6.0_27 JRE. You may need to
explicitly set the path to your *27 JRE to be found first... such as
(not tested, probably wrong path... etc.):

export PATH=/usr/java/jre1.6.0_27/bin:$PATH
java -version

If you export PATH correctly you should see your version found first
before other versions.

Good luck.

Yeah, I just wanted to add that to my post.

Code:
--------------------
which java
/usr/bin/java

--------------------

I checked directory. There are 3 folders: jre1.6.0_27, default, and
latest ('default' is the link to 'latest' which is link to 'jre1.6.0_27'
I guess, I'm quite confused).

Okay, my bad.... where does that point?

ls -l /usr/bin/java

If the result is somewhere like /etc/alternatives/java then find out
where that one points and so on until you get to a real file.

Good luck.

So perhaps you should use /usr/sbin/update-alternatives to change the
default. The export PATH statement I provided before should do the same
thing so I think you did it incorrectly but this is another route to
permanently change your entire system to default to the other Java
implementation.

Good luck.

You know, I've actually checked GUI of java and it looks like there is
a path for java 1.6.0_27 set, but java -version still finds 26th
version.

Further to this question, I was wondering if there was something wrong
with my graphic drivers. Someone suggested installing open source
drivers. Is there a possibility that they would solve the problem? How
are they different? Where could I find them? How to install them
correctly?

Thanks.
