Is there a technical reason this isnt supported?

http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/VMImportPrerequisites.html

Does anyone have a workaround?

Thanks,

I am guessing this is just old data. For example:

http://aws.amazon.com/partners/suse/faqs/

mentions the option to upload VMs directly form SUSE Studio into AWS,
which is really neat. Also, Amazon provides server templates for various
distributions, including both openSUSE and SLES.

Thanks,

This is a limitation with the Amazon tools.

As far as a work around is concerned you can try to convert the vmdk file to a rwa disk image with qemu-img convert and then follow the upload procedure that is documented in the kiwi documentation (http://doc.opensuse.org/projects/kiwi/doc/#sec.ec2.using
