I'm new to SUSE cluster on VMware and looking for guidance to set it up for a new project.
What is the fencing method supported while i build the cluster using VMs on top of ESXi version 6.
Any best practice recommendations for vSphere 6.I did look at the documentation here https://www.novell.com/documentation/oes2015/#cat_clustering
but it does not mention anything about the fencing method to be used.

Best Regards,
Michael

Have you gone through the SLES HAE documentation? That talks about
fencing using SBD:

https://www.suse.com/documentation/sle_ha/book_sleha/data/cha_ha_fencing.html

If you're doing something with OES, you may want to check the OES forums
on https://forums.novell.com/ and then you have options like Novell
Cluster Services, which are a little different as they focus on the novell
products.

Thanks for your response, I did go through the link you mentioned for SLES HAE.
My understanding is that STONITH devices like Power Distribution Units (PDU), Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), Blade Power Control Devices and iLO etc can be used in a physical environment. What i'm trying to understand is that while doing Node level fencing what kind of STONITH device can be used when the SUSE cluster is built on VMs running on VMware hypervisor.

Yes, and one of the subsections talks about special devices, and should
include SBD which can be used regardless of the type of device:

https://www.suse.com/documentation/sle_ha/book_sleha/data/sec_ha_fencing_special.html

Hi Michael,

What i'm trying to understand is that while doing Node level fencing what kind of STONITH device can be used when the SUSE cluster is built on VMs running on VMware hypervisor.

in addition to suicide devices like sdb (relying on a node to kill itself), another option is to use the vcenter or vmware stonithing plugin.

Jens

the search engine of your choice should bring up a number of resources on the subject.

Maybe this one helps? https://www.hastexo.com/resources/hints-and-kinks/fencing-vmware-virtualized-pacemaker-nodes
