I'm not so sure I'd feel any more secure if a device had automatic
updates, because that would be something I'd think might be fairly easy
for a hacker to emulate. Auto-updates would also require a higher level
of programmer for the devices, otherwise the update process could just
as easily be hacked. I see a niche here, ready to be filled. : )

Unfortunately, to keep unit costs down I suspect their in-house or
contract "programmer" is paid the minimum necessary to get the product
quickly onto the store shelves. While the old adage is true that there
is a point in any program where you have to shoot the engineer and get
on with the program, it appears this company shot the engineer prematurely.

A retired rocket scientist I know once said, "In any project there is that
last 1% that never gets finished, you just count on it not being that
important." I think some companies up that percentage a bit too high.
