Q: What is the purpose of these forums?
A: The message forums are the place to discuss and obtain technical support with regards to SUSE products. Feel free to ask questions, respond to any forum message that interests you, or tell all of us about your latest adventure with your SUSE product. If you can assist a fellow user, feel free to jump into the conversation. Don't be shy. Even if you are not sure of your answer, the input from multiple sources gives the person asking the question options. This is not "official" support from SUSE, but with so much experience and technical expertise among our community participants, this is a great place to get some good free advice.

Q: What information is needed when I post?
A: The more information the better. Post your configuration, hardware, any error messages, and anything else you can think of that would help someone troubleshoot your issue. It could save a few days in back-and-forth clarification questions.

Q: Do SUSE employees monitor and/or reply in these forums?
A: SUSE personnel do not officially monitor these forums though you might see a SUSE employee visiting here from time to time on their own. SUSE relies on the volunteer group of Knowledge Partners and you, as a participant, to share knowledge with other participants in the forums. The Knowledge Partners are experts in their field with years of real world experience. The Knowledge Partners also have direct connections to SUSE's technical support to get some assistance if they need it so you are really getting the best of both worlds. This is not "official" support from SUSE so if you wish to talk to a SUSE representative or if your problem is urgent, go to the SUSE Support Site and open a service request. Be aware that SUSE does not endorse, nor monitor any posts or comments, and is not responsible for the completeness, accuracy, or usefulness of any comments or advice posted on this site (or any links). A posted comment represents the views of its author and does not represent the views of SUSE; the opportunity for commentary and facilitating discussion is provided solely as a convenience by SUSE. SUSE reserves the right to remove any post without providing a reason.

Q: How long should I wait for an answer?
A: Knowledge Partners are online daily. They do their best to catch as many unanswered questions in their area of expertise as time allows. However, sometimes neither a Knowledge Partner nor any other user will know the answer to your issue. Sometimes messages fall through the cracks. If you do not receive a reply to your message, you can try reposting it or using one of the other avenues for technical support. Replies from Knowledge Partners are posted in the newsgroups only. Please don't ask for email, chat, or phone support from these volunteers.

Q: What is safe to post here?
A: You should always be careful about posting personal information. Our forums are open to the world to read and search so don't post anything you wouldn't want the world to know. Using the web interface your user information such as email address and password are never displayed. NNTP users can obfuscate their email address in their reader. Log files and error messages sometimes contain information you don't want made public so be sure to edit that info out before posting. As host of these forums, occasionally SUSE may email a survey request to forum participants using a valide email address to assist SUSE in maintaining effective forums but we never share personal information outside the company.

Q: I'm interested in becoming an Knowledge Partner. How do I apply?
A: Our Knowledge Partners are here because they love being here and they are recognized as being significant contributors to shared knowledge. There is a nomination process that happens once per year and if you are significant contributor, you will probably be noticed. Becoming a Knowledge Partner is by invitation only. Q: I have found a problem with the forums. Where do I report it?
A: Because of the fact that we are mere human beings, and we regularly upgrade the software which can change functionality, you may find mild to serious problems with the site. You may just have a great suggestion we could use to improve the look or functionality of our site. Use the forum set up for this purpose or the Contact Us link on the bottom of any forum page.

Terms of Service and Rules


This is YOUR community. Most people have a common sense feel for what is and what is not appropriate in our forums and you folks generally do a great job of policing yourselves. We do, however, need to have a few set rules for everyone to refer to when the need arises.

  • eMail Support: Technical support via e-mail is NOT provided.
  • Attachments: Please do not post attachments to your messages If you want to upload a log or configuration file, please upload it as message text. (Remember to remove your serial number and internal IP addresses before posting!) is a good place to upload information to point to.
  • Offensive Messages: Messages personally attacking, calling names, or otherwise harassing or being condescending to another forum member or any ethnic or religious group will be deleted. Offensive and/or vulgar language is not appropriate for SUSE sponsored forums.
  • Adult Content/Illegal Activity: Messages containing sexually oriented dialog, content, or links to such will be deleted. Messages with links to or suggesting illegal activity will also be deleted. Both could result in lockout.
  • Thread Drift: Please keep discussions on topic. Non-technical discussions belong in the "Chatting over the fence" forum or email.
  • Spam: If more than 2 copies of 'substantially' the same message are posted, they may be considered "spam" and deleted from the forums.
  • Other: We will make an effort to remove ANY objectionable post in a reasonable time. We reserve the right to remove any post without providing a reason.

We realize there are vendors who have products which may help customers resolve problems. We welcome and encourage vendors to participate in the discussions. Product features may be discussed in response to an inquiry, however, to limit the effect of the intrusion of overt sales messages in forums intended for providing technical support, we ask vendors to:

  • Restrict your postings to responses to customer inquiries which may be directly resolved by your product, and please indicate HOW your product may resolve the issue. Product announcements should be made in our "Chatting over the back fence" forum only.
  • Clearly specify your vendor affiliation (with more than just an email address please).
  • Do not discuss pricing or purchase requirements, instead direct customers to E-mail, phone, or web site.
  • We hate to say this as most vendors currently participating add value to these forums, but failure to adhere to any of these rules will result in messages being deleted from the service and possible lockout. (Not to mention the bad image you may create for your company among our forum users)

Our "Chatting over the back fence" forum is different from our other forums. It is place to sit back, relax, and have fun. Whether a "regular" or a "newbie", all are welcome to participate, lurk, or somewhere in between. The purpose of this forum is non-technical (i.e. technical support is not given here). If you are looking for technical support on SUSE products, try one of the other forums. To make this forum as fun as possible for everyone, we ask you to abide by some simple rules in addition to the regular rules above:

  • Announcements of Products or Services: Persons or companies are allowed to announce products/services/web sites etc. relating to SUSE products in our chat forum as long as these announcements are limited to a single announcement.
  • Religious and Political Topics: These topics just cause bad feelings so we just don't allow them to start.
  • Attachments: Messages containing attachments will be removed.
  • No Technical Support: Technical support for SUSE products will not be given in the chat forum.
  • Root Messages: Users posting an excess number of root messages that are an apparent attempt to overwhelm the discussions will be asked to cease such postings and their messages may be removed.
  • Forum Moderation: Susan Rickey is the current moderator for this group. Her word is law here. She'll also hand out a good natured "thwack!" once in a while when necessary so watch out. She's judge, jury, executioner and party hostess. Now that we've scared the bejeebers out of ya, go out there and HAVE FUN! :)

SUSE's rights to your posts

If you post a a message to the SUSE Community, you grant SUSE the unrestricted right to use, modify, or redistribute the content with or without attribution, and the right to sublicense without restriction.

Why can't I post sometimes?

The forums use SUSE Login, based on Access Manager, which has a connection timeout. The forum software has it's own session timeout. If you are idle for too long (usually over 8 hours) or you come to the forums from another location on the SUSE site, the forum and Access Manager timeout may not match up causing it to look like you are logged in, but not allowing you to post. If that happens to you, clear your browser session and start over again at the forum home page, login, and you should be on your way.

Can I edit or delete my message?

Once you submit your post in these forums, you have 10 minutes to edit it. After 10 minutes, if you need to, you should post a reply with any corrective information. Why? Two reasons. First, the NNTP protocol doesn't support editing of posts and so edits/deletes won't transit our gateway unless done before the cron job runs the gateway to sync the messages. Second, editing a post after it has replies could invalidate those replies because the original information changed. Posting a follow up reply with additional/changed information allows any previous reply to stay in context.

Creating a "Signature" for your user ID

Because signatures have often been used to post spam links, new users are not able to use signatures in their posts. When a user has participated enough to become a trusted user (automatic based on number of posts and time since registration), they will be able to create/use signatures in their posts.

Warning about changing email and/or password

The SUSE Community doesn't use vBulletin's built in authentication mechanism, but uses SUSE Login. For security reasons SUSE Login doesn't pass a user's password to vBulletin. It does pass a user ID and email address which is stored in your vBulletin profile and used to verify your identity when you login to the forums. This is only stored once when the vBulletin account is created and because it's the verification method, it can't be automatically updated by SUSE Login. Also, the forum software as configured doesn't support a dash "-" in a user ID even though you can register one on the SUSE site. If, for some reason, you want to change your ID or email address, or are having any problem with your account, you need to contact us (use the CONTACT US link in the footer) so we can get your vBulletin (Forum) account synchronized with SUSE Login.

Member Ranks & Reputation

As you contribute to our community, you will earn a "rank" indicator based on your number of contributions. See more information here: MEMBER RANKS As people click on the star at the bottom of your posts, they give you reputation points which are indicated by the gray/green bars beneath your rank indicator. Remember that number of posts don't necessarily indicate a skill level, though they generally indicate a willingness and experience.
