might be some font mismatch or, worst-case and unlikely, memory corruption (had that once, years ago, where an X font server garbled internal maps and things went back to normal after a restart). Do you have a chance of changing the fonts in use?

That's one of the reasons I dislike servers running graphical interfaces. Will the installer run non-graphical instead, if you i.e. unset the DISPLAY variable before starting "install"? It'd be only a work-around to the technical problem, of course.
