# Design new network

I am trying to get my head around this one. Want to use xen to migrate the
existing network to all new servers. They are oes2sp3 right now. The goal is
to migrate this to OES11 with 2 nodes running OES11/SLes11sp1 as Dom0 hosts.
Will run 3 servers as physical, The vm’s will run off a FC san. The physical
as well as the vm’s will need to be able to talk to the fc san. I also want
to run the backup software off of one of the xen hosts whic is sep sesam.
The autoloader is on fc as well. We are not going to start with multipath.
What kind of issues will I run into with this? Will it even work?

Hi Rick,
first of all, SLES11SP2 is out, you might want to wait until OES is supported on that to save you from migrating twice. And you’d get Xen 4.1.2.

> Are you talking about disk resources only, or do you need direct access? Disks would be easy, but “native access” from within DomUs might be a bit of a hassle (“pvSCSI” isn’t supported nicely in Xen 4.0, haven’t looked at Xen 4.1 yet).
I’ve no clear picture of your target environment yet… 3 physical machines, two of them running as Xen servers? How many DomUs do you expect? Do you plan for DomU migration between the Xen servers?
What part do you need support with, Xen, SLES11, FC, capacity planning, availability, OES?

Just as OES2 SPn was only supported on SLES10 SPn+1 (well until OES2 SP3
on SLES10 SP3 happened), OES11 is not supported on SLES11 SP2 with OES11
SP1 expected for that. Timescale unknown.
For anyone patching their OES11 servers, particularly given there are
currently no OES11 updates available, if SLES11 SP2 is offered please do
yourself a huge favour and decline it.
Finally note that this is SUSE-hosted support forum for SLES
Virtualization. For OES-related issues you should post to the
Novell-hosted support forums @

I’m no OES specialist and was only aware of the delay itself, without knowing how far away that is. So thank you for your opinion on that…

Simon these are virtualization questions to me. There really is not an
appropriate forum for OES virtualization. I suppose the biggest question I
had is how do you get virtualized servers to talk to FC resources to make it
simple. Yes these will be be OES server vm’s but just don’t understand how
the vm will see the pools created on FC?

Why do you want/need OES on the host server? There are only a few
supported OES services when the host is running Xen.

I didn’t set any redirection but merely pointed out that the SUSE forums
are now separate to Novell and since OES11 was all that was referenced
the Novell-hosted OES forums seemed more appropriate.
In the past OES questions in SLES forums and vice versa could just cause
confusion but now with Novell and SUSE forums being separate not
everyone monitors/uses both. Since I mostly access them via NNTP I still do.

They may be virtualization questions but you did ask about OES11 as Dom0
hosts.
I’ll suggest Novell looks at creating a virtualization sub-forum in the
OES area.

once you see the SAN LUNs (“FC disks”) from within Dom0, you can pass these on to the DomUs like any other disk. (But there are many ways to skin a cat …)
When it’s other FC resources than disks you’ll have to go for vscsi, as far as I can tell.

Your right Simon. I just figured as soon as virtual I would be redirected
