Hi,

Any recommendations for mail migration tools from GroupWise (2012) and Lotus notes into Google mail (or) O365? Few comments from experiences and tips would also be nice. 🙂

Feeling sad to leave the “trusted workhorse” but Novell just does not see that they are missing the critical UCC components = well integrated audio / video / desktop sharing capabilities… ☹

I won’t dispute your business decisions, but IMO it’s kind of tacky to
ask a vendor for help migrating to a competitor’s product.

If you do that it would be a big mistake. Do you really want to trust
Google to not make major changes? Do you want to trust them with the
privacy of your email. It’s really a good thing you posted here before
you make one of the biggest mistakes of your life! [whew!].

Oh, I though that it stated “chat” but obviously it should state “sales”… 😉

As I understood that the forums are not official support or sales channels and here people can talk openly about all the things related to Novell - good or bad, in this case IMHO bad.

Hey Kim,

Yes, I’m begging for something bad to happen here… 🙂

Believe me, I have been working with Novell products for +10 years and have been very satisfied with those - or not fully with ZCM10 🙂 but most of those. But the roadmaps of the core UCC products just wont serve our business anymore → change has to be made.

Of course I do not trust the biggest players cloud security and privacy so much. But if you think that anything you put into network in form of email or file storage (internal or external) should be treated as “public information” from security perspective - helps a lot. I would also like to see someone from ICT security management to say with full confidence that their data is totally safe in internal network - even “against” the public intelligence agencies.

But yes, thanks anyway… 🙂

Doug doesn’t work for Novell, has never worked for Novell, and has
posted his own opinions in this newsgroup on various subjects over
the years, and was doing the same with his message to you. I can
understand why you might not have enjoyed hearing it, but he had the
right to give his opinion. 🙂

I would argue the opposite.

Obviously, while this is an “offical” forum hosted by netiq, most if
not all of the content is user-generated - its perfectly fine to ask
other users for advice, surely?

And second, while I have seen vendor forums that banned users for even
mentioning competing products (and we won’t go into the furball around
nagios and monitoring-plugins/nagiosql) I would look askance at any
company who felt that, once _your_ data was in their product, it is
verboden to want to extract it and move it to another similar product
from another vendor. While that sort of thing might lead to some short
term business retention, long term it will lead to avoidance of dealing
with a company so committed to customer lock-in.

I do not think that (permissibility, etc.) was the original statement.
The original statement was that, in one person’s opinion, it’s kind of
tacky to do this.

The irony in this is probably that of all the products of all the
companies out there, Novell’s GroupWise has been one of the easiest
proprietary products to migrate from, and Novell made it easy by providing
connectors to other tools which were almost exclusively used for migrating
to competing products.

Still, I agree with the original sentiment. Asking the old vendor for
tools to migrate to the new vendor seems (IMO) tacky, and if I was ever in
that position (migrating to a new vendor) and the new vendor did not
provide tools to help with that migration, I’d have to wonder about either
the logic of my plan or the logic of my choice of new vendor to implement
the plan.

Step 1: Migrate stuff to new vendor: Fail
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Dust off resumé.

Good luck.

David:

I agree with you completely in terms of locking of data. That’s not a
stance of Novell, Netiq or any of the business units owned by the
company. I say that as a volunteer for almost two decades, now, of
experience with the company, and not an employee.

I would counter argue that a non-employee user pointing out his
opinion of the asking in the company’s newsgroup of how to move from
the company’s product isn’t even CLOSE to being a company opinion or
stance, so your concern about that can be relaxed and forgotten.

I don’t believe anyone said he couldn’t ask, someone just gave a
personal opinion about the asking. 🙂

I agree. 🙂

Plus in all seriousness, the upcoming update to GMS will make it
possible for Outlook users to connect to a GW backend via GMS. Since
most UUC products integrate with Outlook, not Exchange (or O365), that
will make the move even less necessary.

So my response to Joseph’s comment is…

Darn, was hoping it would be earlier. We have a person here (a TPTB)
who is really pushing to have us move to exchange because he wants it
for outlook, etc.

So far we’ve been able to stave it off, mainly due to new licensing
cost for exchange vs maint on Groupwise. That might not be enough, and
especially if office365 licensing gives email access for only a few
dollars more per user than just office.
