# lvscan same pvid

I issue pvscan and vgscan and the output looks good. When I issue lvscan I receive messages about the same pvid! How can this be corrected?

do you by chance use multipath on that machine? Any more hints to see when you run “lvscan -vvv”?

Hello Jens, good morning. I do not know if I use multipath or not. How can I determine this? Here is the requested output. I also did this with pvscan and found nothing with one of the uuids.

I checked the output and it seems that the LVM code is actually picking up the same devices multiple times:

Do you have hard-coded devices in filters in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf, with duplicates? Probably not, but it’s worth a look.

I’d guess that “pvscan -vv” also reports the according devices multiple times. You might want to open a service request then (if not configured multiple times in lvm.conf). OTOH, it looks mostly like an annoyance, as LVM seems to handle this issue quite effectively (detecting the duplicates, reporting them in verbose mode, but ignoring them elsewise), so depending on your support situation, you might let it rest 😉

Hello Jens, it is true when you say it is an annoyance but I like to investigate these type of issues as a learning tool. In my lvm.conf file I have one filter statement that I am not sure if it could cause this issue. `filter = ["r|/dev/.*/by-path/.*|", "r|/dev/.*/by-id/.*|","r|/dev/fd.*|", "r|/dev/cdrom|", "a/.*/"]` I wonder if this part “r|/dev/._/by-path/._|” needs to be separated as “r|/dev/._|", "r|/by-path/._|”, and the part that follows it; “r|/dev/._/by-id/._|”,“r|/dev/fd.\*|”.

I can fully understand that, it’s the way I work with these incidents, too. OTOH, depending on one’s limits and constraints, so issues will have to be left unresolved 😉

No, I believe this filter is both syntactically and semantically correct - white-space outside the quotes is irrelevant and the first four entries remove the udev-generated device names and /dev/cdrom from the list of handled devices, while the fifth entry allows any other device to be handled.
