It’s about ten years old. Linux on Sparc is quite a niche thing to be doing, but you can get something newer than ten years old. There’s evidence of an ‘openSUSE’ ([http://en.opensuse.org/SPARC](http://en.opensuse.org/SPARC)) Sparc build but it lists “an installer image is currently absent” as one of it’s bugs, which seems like something of a hindrance to using it. There are Sparc versions of the current ‘Debian’ ([http://www.debian.org/ports/sparc](http://www.debian.org/ports/sparc)) release and ‘Gentoo’ ( [http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-faq.xml](http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-sparc-faq.xml)) releases. I’ve not tried either of them myself since I don’t have access to any Sparc hardware.
