# Where to get HP binary plugin?

Since I’ve never tried using a scanner with Linux before I’ve raided a
store cupboard and acquired a HP scanner to play with. As a result I’ve
learnt that some HP printers/scanners, including it would seem the one
I’ve got hold of, require a binary plugin that works along with hplip.
The hp-setup and hp-plugin commands are supposed to be able to download
and install this binary plugin. The problem is that these commands
download the plugin from [linuxprinting.org](http://linuxprinting.org) which has been down for
weeks.
It’s possible to download the plugin for the latest version of hplip
from the hplip website, but they don’t have previous versions available.
I can’t find anywhere to download the plugin that’s needed for the
version of hplip which is included in SLED 11 SP1 (3.9.8). Anyone know
where to get it? (Updating hplip isn’t a satisfactory solution.)
This doesn’t just affect me of course, it affects anyone using SLED who
needs to get that HP plugin. hp-setup and hp-plugin on SLED are
effectively broken due to [linuxprinting.org](http://linuxprinting.org) being down.

.id is Indonesia
.go.id is apparently Government and Governmental System.
How did you find that?
What makes this situation really absurd is that hp-setup and hp-plugin
download a configuration file which tells them where to get the plugin
from. A configuration file which has been left pointing at a website
that’s been down for weeks… Anyway, that configuration file is at
[http://hplip.sourceforge.net/plugin.conf](http://hplip.sourceforge.net/plugin.conf) and is contains checksums for
the plugins. The shasum for
[http://soerya.surabaya.go.id/driver/Printer/driver\_printer\_hp/hp-printer-plugin/hplip-3.9.8-plugin.run](http://soerya.surabaya.go.id/driver/Printer/driver_printer_hp/hp-printer-plugin/hplip-3.9.8-plugin.run)
matches what’s in the configuration file. Which is nice.
I might submit an enhancement request against SLED for a package that
contains the plugin. It would be much better that having to run
hp-plugin and having it spew files over the filesystem and do whatever
else it does.

I just googled on the run file name until I found a site hosting it…
Well if [kernel.org](http://kernel.org) didn’t have it’s issues (is there a timeline for it
to be back up?), then it would be available as that’s where those files
live.

Maybe, but there’s license issues with distributing Flash, Java and
Adobe Reader and they’re all in SLED.
I figured out which files were being modified/created by the installer
and put together an rpm myself in the mean time. The installer only
modifies one existing file, /var/lib/hp/hplip.state, it’s simple enough
to script the modification in %post and %postun
With my rpm installed on the machine the scanner’s connected to, the
scanner now works. Which is nice. The only part of the process were root
(which users of machines I manage don’t have) was required to get the
scanner working was getting the plugin installed. With the plugin in an
rpm it’s simple to put it on any machine for people who need it, or just
push it out to all the machines.

AFAIK, there is a agreement that SLE can ship, for openSUSE it’s
in the non-oss repositories.

I would put an enhancement request in via bugzilla, post back the
number and will ask my Novell friends 😉

I just used “hplip-3.9.8-plugin.run” then on the second page…?

Now you’ve found me a copy of the 3.9.8 plugin and I’ve worked out how
to package it, an update for hplip 3.10.11 has been released!
‘NOVELL: Downloads - hplip 5307’

[linuxprinting.org](http://linuxprinting.org) is still down but the 3.10.11 plugin can (at time of
