Login screen stopped working after update to SLES SP7

I have a PC running SLES with Gnome that I recently updated from SP6 to SP7. The update proceded without any issues but on reboot I cannot login from the Gnome login screen. The screen is displayed correctly and the mouse moves the pointer but I cannot activate the user by clicking on the name, in fact I cannot click on anything and the keyboard does not work. I can login to the machine remotely and all services appear to be running correctly.

Can anyone advise?

Update. Not strictly accurate that keyboard doesn’t work. CTRL-ALT-F2 will take me to a text console and CTRL-ALT-F7 back to the GUI, but when on the GUI I cannot TAB around the options and ENTER does not select the highlighted user. Mouse clicks also have no effect.
