Rancher upgrades

Hello,

I’m currently running Rancher on AWS EKS with Kubernetes version 1.26, and I’m planning to upgrade the cluster in two steps to reach version 1.28.

According to the Rancher support matrix, I need to upgrade Rancher to version 2.7.18 before moving to Kubernetes 1.27, and then to 2.8.15 before upgrading to 1.28.

However, I’ve been unable to find either of these Rancher versions (2.7.18 and 2.8.15) on Docker Hub or any public image registry.

Could someone from SUSE please provide access to these images, or let me know how I can obtain them?

Many thanks,

I’m sorry but 2.7.10 is the last community release. 2.7.11 - 2.7.18 are Prime only.

Tho you can upgrade to 2.7.10 then upgrade to 2.8.5, followed by 2.9.3, and finally 2.10.3.

Thank you but can I clarify please. If I want to use the Rancher UI to manage an EKS cluster (so not RKE), is that available as a community license for the newer versions ?

Thanks again.
Rob

There is currently no code difference between Rancher Prime and Community. So yes, you can manage EKS clusters through Rancher without issue.

Thank you, just to be clear, do I need a license to manage an EKS cluster using the latest release of Rnacher?

Rancher does not require a license to manage EKS clusters or any other types of Kubernetes clusters.

It depends on what you mean by “latest release” - you don’t need a license if using Rancher Community but that will limit you to the latest Community (free) release of a major version which will be lower than the latest Prime (paid) release of the same major version.
