SLE Micro for Rancher is free for use

Hello, according to the information above, using SLE Micro in Rancher is free. Where can I verify this information? I haven’t been able to find it in the official documentation.

I’m looking to build an immutable operating system using Elemental for use in Rancher. However, I’m concerned about the underlying SLE Micro and hope there won’t be any associated costs.

Thank you for any answers! Sorry for my poor English.

It is free, but you only get 90 days of updates. You might look at openSUSE LEAP Micro which is very similar, but I don’t know about Elemental for it. Leap Micro is immutable as far as I know, but could be wrong. I’m using it to set up rke2 and Rancher in my little lab using some mini-pc. Every time I work on things, I find that there is more I need to know before I can make the entire system work.

Hello, I’m delighted to have received a definitive reply, but I still have one question: does this 90-day update restriction apply in a legal sense, or is it merely technical? When using Sle Micro with Elemental, there isn’t really a proper update in the traditional sense; it simply replaces the existing version with the latest one. Is there any further clarification or official documentation on this? Thank you once again for your reply! (sorry for my English)

I’m pretty sure that all forms of updating will time out after 90 days unless you buy a license. That’s why I moved to openSUSE for my lab. LEAP Micro is roughly equal to SLE Micro, but you can also use the rolling release based on Tumbleweed called openSUSE MicroOS.

I don’t think Elemental is available for openSUSE, do you have more information on it so I can look into it for my lab? I know Harvester is on Elemental, but I thought it was part of the paid licenses so I didn’t look into it.

[edit] your English is better than many of the people I work with, no need to apologize, I think your questions come through clearly.

I previously saw an issue on GitHub related to Harvester, just for your reference: https://github.com/harvester/harvester/discussions/7433.

When you say “will time out,” are you referring to this in a technical sense rather than a legal one? If so, I think we could test it for 90 days before putting it into production  .

Thank you for your reply ! (btw: I use deepL translator, then make some revisions, but I was still worried that the machine translation might come across as a bit crude and lead to misunderstandings. So I thought it would be relatively safe to start by stating that my English isn’t good—just like how novice drivers in China display a “Learner” sign on their cars  )
