Hello. I would like to upgrade a SLES 10 SP1 to at least SP2 or the latest SLES 11 SPx. I was wondering if support is purchased, if that'll cover both options or the lesser? I'm a newbie to Linux, so if you can dumb the response down if possible. Thanks.

Hi
It's possible (See 10.1.3)
https://www.suse.com/releasenotes/x86_64/SUSE-SLES/11-SP3/#Update
A few dvd's worth of downloads and upgrading though.....

Is it possible to do a fresh install of SLES 11 SP3?

When you "to at least SP2" do you mean SLES10 SP2 or SLES11 SP3 (which
is the latest version and Service Pack of SLES currently available)?

If SLES10 SP2 then that's relatively easy and straightforward (ignoring
the fact that SLES10 is now out of support unless you have purchased
Long Term Service Pack Support) - see section 10.2 of the SLES10
Deployment guide[1] and "Procedure for updating from SLES 10 Service
Pack 1 and SLED 10 Service Pack 1" section of TID 7000387[2].

However if you mean SLES11 SP2 then you have to upgrade to each SLES10
Service Pack in turn until you're at SLES10 SP4 (so SLES10 SP1 -> SLES10
SP2 -> SLES10 SP3 -> SLES10 SP4) from which you can then upgrade
directly to SLES11 SP2 (or SLES11 SP3). Hence the reason for Malcolm
suggesting a fresh install of SLES11 SP3.

HTH.

Hi cgr_mql,

[going from SLES10SP1 to SLES10SPx or SLES11SPx] I was wondering if support is purchased, if that'll cover both options or the lesser?

SUSE's "support" is not version-specific - you can run any version of SLES and up-/downgrade at your will. With "support" I'm talking about update subscriptions - when it comes to assistance / solving problems, there's a distinction between currently supported versions, those versions that can be covered under special "long-term service" contracts and all the rest, which is basically unsupported.

Jens
