View Full Version : Brainshare?

Is Brainshare or something in a similar spirit of it but presented by
Micro Focus version of it ever going to come back? This is one of the
few conferences that I can request to go to and it gets approved without
any question. Its been about a couple of years now so I was curious or
if I should look for a new conference to try to go to. Thanks!

BrainShare was a Novell conference that, as far as I know, didn't get
traction with the new Micro Focus company when Novell/TAG was merged
into Micro Focus. Micro Focus has what is called "Dev Days" and I've
heard some talk about taking aspects of the old BrainShare conference
and merging it into Dev Days, but it's all just talk right now. I've
not heard of any specific plans.

You may want to keep an eye out with this events query:
https://www.microfocus.com/search?term=events The web integration
project has been under way for quite a while now...with thousands of
web pages to be updated and merged so the web is a little behind the
times on events, but from that query you can see the events each
product segment has.

Thanks, thats good to know. I just liked the format of Brainshare where
you have the few days to get away from the office, focus on learning
something new, direct contact with the devs (and fix some ongoing issues
in some cases), etc... Shoot, I'd still try to attend even if I had to
hop a plane and head to the UK for a conference of the same caliber.

There was some chat yesterday saying that the Dev Days stuff may happen
all around the world at different times, for a couple of days each time,
and have a strong focus on the techy stuff, kind of like BrainShare's
roots, so I'm hopeful for that to expand to cover the (new) full line of
Micro Focus stuff, particularly including the stuff that came from Novell.

Despite working with the products since late 1990's, I've never been to
a Brainshare....looks like I never will now too

More local oriented "Dev Days" could be good, but my fear is that they
won't have the same knowledge or networking available as the Brainshare
sessions would have....

*sighs*

Yea, I started out going when they were at the university and we were
going from classroom to classroom. Then we moved to the Palace. One
week of fantastic learning with no work distractions. Quality products
and very educated people to make those products sing. The idea is
great. Unfortunately, who ever came up with the idea of stealth
marketing, wish they had been working for a different company.

Yep, one of the nice things about Brainshare was the variety of sessions
at different levels so you could start light and dive deep into a new
product you were thinking about deploying, or look at several products
that you were looking for more knowledge in. Not to mention the
developer night... the last Brainshare I was able to pull out my laptop,
connect to my systems back at the office and in short order the guys
were able to fix a couple of issues that I was having a long back an
forth on in a support ticket.

I only made it to two Brainshares, but they were worth it.

Where in the world are you based?
How long would an event have to be elsewhere for it to be worth your
while travelling to it?

Has it been that long? Sheesh, you guys need to at least come over for a
visit. Of course, I'm not in Utah any more, but Washington's nice this
time of the year, especially on our island. :)

Yup, it's been that long :(

Would love to come over for a visit - might not be very practical at the
moment as the kiddies are 4 & 2, but that will get less of an obstacle
in the next year or so :)

Speaking of Brainshare. I greatly enjoyed the ones I went to and all of
the things I learned and was able to take back with me. Even the swag,
especially the best fitting cap I've ever had.

At the Brainshare 2000, Novell gave out the best cap ever. I've often
thought/wondered over the years if any still exist
(https://wiki.microfocus.com/index.php/File:Novell_Hats_007.jpg) that a
person could even pay for, as the one I have, has seen better days, but
I still ware it.

I realize this is a reach, but does anyone know if any still exist?

I had one but gave it away last year to a charity collecting hats for

You might keep an eye on Novell hats on eBay, though unless the hat
in the photo says "Novell" on the back of it, it might not show up
under a "Novell +(hat, cap)" search and just be in the general hats
collection. :)
