Ah the above tells us you have Micro Focus/Novell Open Enterprise Server
(OES) 11 SP3 on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11 SP4 so
technically you should be posting in the Micro Focus OES forums ...
except this is a Linux issue not OES.

With the external drive connected what does "lsusb -t" report?
